From 1st October 2005 the regulations for the installation of security alarms throughout the European Union underwent a substantial change with the introduction of the new European Standard EN 50131 - BS4737 (1986) is withdrawn for new installations in favour of the new European Standards. However as no European Union country has yet agreed conformity with the standard a "bridging standard" has had to be introduced for each country for the time being; in the UK this standard is entitled PD:6662.

PD:6662 provides for the specific grading of alarm systems and alarm signalling from Grade 1 to Grade 4 - PD:6662 takes on special importance for a system requiring police response and/or a professional system as installed by a UKAS accredited installer - such systems must be installed to the new standard from 1st October 2005, this in addition to DD:243 2004.

The Board exists to ensure that its approved companies adhere to quality installation procedures and to this end companies are inspected, normally twice a year, to ensure that they continue to maintain good standards. Inspected companies do not just check themselves as with some quality procedures, a third-party inspection by the Boards Regional Inspectors is mandatory.
